Sugar Story

Sugar Story: Spending my Youth

I still don’t get math.

Me getting a withdrawal from my first bank account:

Teller: How would you like your withdrawal?

Me: Oh, just cash.

To be fair, I teach foundational concepts of math; the brain mapping needed to solve algebraic equations or the visualization to create a blueprint for the newest suburban jungle. Yes, it is important to know what foundation I’m pouring into, but I cannot say assuredly that I can solve the problem or build the house. And I love math. I love the consistency of numbers, how negatives can go back to positives. Percentages and pie charts are my favorite conviction displays for monthly budgeting. All the math teachers who said we would use it were correct. They did not cure me of math anxiety which means I will never be able to answer math questions in public. Growing up in an education system that thrived on output now, think later, and “there’s an algorithm for that,” I couldn’t “see” the solution everybody except me seemed to be able to conclude.

I’m still getting my old me to understand, I can still work on the problem brick by brick.
